Guidelines
on what makes a Show
accessible for disabled handlers (and benefits all handlers), optimally:
· Firm, level, well
maintained ground, particularly in
the rings
· Optional
forward/level parking/camping if space
allows. For, for example, Blue Badge holding handlers or handlers who need
to regularly check
the rings visually.
· Accessible toilets
and exercise area.
· A network of
tarmac roads across the Showground
· Keeping notices by
the rings/secretaries office
updated
· Electric hook up
where available (very limited,
contact Show Secretary for advice)
Disabled handlers can contact Show Secretaries before the entries
closing date,
for example: to discuss forward camping and/or Ring Managers on the day
to
discuss specific access. For
example:
giving the lead back to the handler as they leave the ring rather than
leaving
it on the floor, if appropriate, or starting with with an ‘In
your own time’
and a simultaneous thumbs up, or stopping, in appropriate classes, with
a
whistle and thumbs down. In
our
experience Shows are generally getting it right and are very helpful
where ever
possible.
Following on from the Show Ground Reviews first published on agilitynet, many thanks for permission to do so; the following are our most recent experiences, whilst not a comprehensive list they are intended as an information resource. Whilst no Show Ground or Show will ever be absolutely perfect, our current favorite Ground is The Royal Cornwall Showground at Wadebridge. Which is one of the reasons we are offering a ‘Best Overall Disabled Handler’ Trophy at the Kernow K9 Show there in March 2008
Contact Philippa on 01803 867074 / philippa.armstrong@lineone.net with your Show Ground experiences and/or Access Information and she will update this page.
